Tonight I had the opportunity to attend a golf social group at the local driving range. Whilst once again hitting golf balls in all directions I was reminded by the golf pro, to remember the basics. Shorten the swing, stand up and rest the weight on you’re toes, don’t over swing and then hit it, obviously keeping your head down.
Lesson over the ball should go straight. The good thing is after a couple of weeks it does. you might be asking the question –
How does this relate to SEO and my website?
Easy answer is….. LEARN THE BASICS
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is not about fancy techniques that push the limits and risk your site being ousted by the search engines. Learn the basics, once in place you can then learn to grow these techniques and continue to grow your search engine techniques.
So what are the basics…..
1. Page Titles – all different and showing the benefit of the page and the key focus. Please don’t put your company name and website address at the front, your wasting valuable real estate. Remember the page title is what appears in the search engine listings as the blue link. It should entice the user to click through.
2. Page Content – again unique and adding value. I took a call today from a friend whose creating content for a website. The products are listed on lots of sites and he wanted to clarify the need to create unique content in order to appear higher in search. Well what more can you say other than YES! make your site different, ensure you show the benefits to the user and why they should use your company.
3. Get links to your site – this can be difficult, but at the end of the day if you’re creating content that adds value people will start to link and raise your profile. Please be very careful of the issues with link building techniques used by some companies. If you embark on working with an SEO company make sure you know exactly what they are doing to promote your site. If they are unwilling to share and explain the risks then go else where……..
So to recap, LEARN the BASICS – it will both make your SEO activities a lot more targeted and focused as well as improve your golf swing……….
