Simplifying the task – it still takes all day to do the work

Why is it we all try and find ways to speed up a task in order to make our jobs a lot easier and faster whilst still providing clear advice to a client. Ive been working on a number of website assessments for a client – in total reviewing around 15 different websites and it’s taken a while to complete.

Whilst with the National B2B Centre I carried out a large number of website assessments and it’s always been fairly generic in structure but in the majority it takes a long time to do one correctly and actually provide clear guidance and benefit.

The task then is to develop a generic template that requires the user to fill in various fields in an excel spreadsheet reducing the amount of content to craft. Finally got something done which looks fairly logical, next step is to put some marking metrics against it to come up with an overall ranking score. Perhaps in the long term I might even look to build it into a web-based form that’s automated.

The template at the moment looks at the following areas:

1. Indexed pages across the search engines and also looks at cannonicalisation and potential duplicate content due to bad domain redirecting
2. Page construction from menu position, image alt attributes, Analytics code and location
3. Page Titles and there uniqueness and the URL structures in relation to dynamic and static generated irks along with keyword focused page names
4. Standard pages, contact details and legal aspects such as VAT and Company number

It’s not complete and even as I’m writing this I’m thinking of lots of additional things that can be added.

If you have any thoughts of additional bits that might fit or you’d like to see then drop me an email. Very happy to receive some input on the various tabs and always looking to develop it further.
