Keywords are one of the most important things to get right when creating pages for your website. How exactly do you identify and select keywords for effective SEO and come up with useful sets of phrases to use to create content.
Over the past week or so I’ve been working on a presentation for the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce on Search Engine Optimisation. Working through various posts and videos on selecting keywords I’ve come up with a strategy to test and develop.
It’s been interesting viewing various discussion on what tools to use and what not to, but in the world of the small business owner trying to develop a website and promote services then cost of tools becomes an inhibiting factor in most cases.
First place to start is in the Google Adwords Tool – logged in provides more associated keywords. Yes I understand that it may not give accurate results, as some have suggested that Google only show phrases they can get you to pay for.
I tend to based on other points that I’ve read focus the phrases to exact – This gives a more accurate figure of search views – not sure if it’s the right way but perhaps doing some ratio between phrase and exact may give a clearer figure – but thats for another day.
I select keywords that have a good search volume per month and export the data to excel for further analysis. I then review search volumes for the phrase and straight keyword matches and creat a straight ratio between the two figures.
This provides a clear idea of the potential search volume and with relation of search volumes can then be used to select the relevant keywords.
Not really sure yet if it works fully but will be looking over the next few weeks to see if the website improve.
As ever SEO continues to develop meaning you have to stay on top of what’s happening.
