how useful are blogs for getting search engine position and traffic?

For the past week I’ve been posting on a number of blogs trying to get good position in the search engine listings.  I’ve spent years talking about SEO and the how to, probably anout time I actual sat and done some proper work and show it works.

1 example of how it’s worked.

A couple of us at the B2B Centre have our own interests outside of work and we noticed the Gareth with his site arrowsmithmarketing.co.uk appeared top in Google for the following phrase – ‘impartial website assessment’.  Mark Bonnett (Yellow Zombie) then lays down the challenge.

How easy would it be to get above his site?

One quick blog post 15 minutes later and 1st in Google for the same phrase.  Still waiting for the modified webpage to appear as well that links fromthe blog post.

Mark then goes and posts on his site only to go top again, however looks like thats moved down now to below Gareth and I.

Second example:

I’ve created a blog for another project TWPN.com.  The blog runs on Google Blogger with it’s own domain – blog.twpn.com – a worldwide property site.  This site has been live for a while and it’s now at the stage of driving traffic to increase visits and users.  The blog has been operating for around 3 weeks and has a number of small posts, so no great presence on the internet.

The blog ranks for the following terms:

  • Looking to by a new house in the UK
  • Quality properties in Portugal
  • Taylor Wimpey residential properties
  • Tax implications of buying overseas

Still working on it – but the creating focused content around an issue / problem works very effectively.
